Bootstrapping is the art of building a business with the resources you already have. No outside investors, no board meetings, no pressure to hit artificial growth targets set by people who've never used your product. It means every rand you spend comes from revenue you've earned, and every decision you make is yours to own.

Why we chose it

At Existence, we chose this path deliberately. Not because we couldn't raise, but because we wanted to build something sustainable before we built something fast. Bootstrapping forced us to be ruthless about priorities. When you don't have a war chest, you can't afford to chase vanity metrics or build features nobody asked for. Every line of code has to earn its place.

The trade-offs are real

The trade-offs are real, though. Growth is slower. You wear more hats than you'd like. There are months where the runway feels impossibly short and you wonder if you're being principled or just stubborn. But there's a clarity that comes with constraint. When you bootstrap, you learn your business inside out: your unit economics, your customer acquisition costs, your true product-market fit, because you have no choice.

We're not anti-VC. If the right opportunity came along with the right partner, we'd listen. But we've proven to ourselves that you don't need permission, or someone else's money, to build something people love.

The art of bootstrapping isn't about doing more with less. It's about doing what matters, and nothing else.
